Assumptions-saying something that presumes you know what another person is thinking, feeling or doing-always hurt the person about the who the assumptions were made, and create a barrier to intimacy. Remarks such as “You don’t care about me as much as I do you”; “You don’t have to worry about money”; “Work is a lot easier for you”; “You never listen”; ” You don’t have much to do today” all have an effect of closing down the other person and limiting reality to our perception of it. Basically, we are saying “I know who you are and what’s going on with you and I don’t need your version of the story.”
Assumptions can feel like a violation of spirit to the person who is theoretically being perceived. They are a reduction of the true complexity of reality and a negation of the other person’s essence. Many of us experienced these kinds of dismissing assumptions from our parents – “You’re lazy; you’ll never amount to anything” – and so we can be very easily hurt when someone assumes things that are not true.
I was at a friend’s house recently and witnessed the following conversation:
Martha: I know that you come home late from work just to torture me. You’re still angry about last night and you just wanted to punish me some more.
Fred: Well, actually……
Martha: Come on, I know you’re still mad. STOP PRETENDING!
Fred: I am not angry. Actually, there was a head on collision on the freeway right in front of me. Two people were killed. I had to drive into town to call the police.
Fred had been really shaken up by the accident, but rather than asking why he was late and then attempt to comfort him, Martha came on with a load of negative assumptions. That in turn made Fred angry and the situation deteriorated from there.
Assumptions take away our uniqueness and freedom of expression. They close off possibilities by making people withdraw and hide out even more. Eliminating assumptions opens the flow of real conversation in which lovers can show their real selves and discover the beautiful particulars of one another.

When you are considering any type of self help books on relationships, it’s important to know if the book in question is going to be quality advice that can help your situation.
Not all self help books on relationships are created equal!
People seek advice on topics about sorts of issues that can arise in their relationship and find themselves following advice that can actually be harmful or counter-intuitive to their situation that they are seeking help about.
